Picnic Popcorn

Ya know... sometimes I just don't want to bake. I'm too lazy to bake something and then face the mountain of dishes that I just created. Or, I just don't have time to bake and cool and cut and package. You know what I'm talking.

These little popcorn packs are great for something quick, fun, and easy for children of all ages to enjoy.

Also, a great thing about popcorn snacks - It's a NUT FREE treat for kids with nut allergies to enjoy. Just watch the labels on the extras that you add in.

Whirley Pop (Pop Corn Popper) or 4 Qt. Pot with Lid
2 teaspoons oil
1 cup popcorn kernels
1/3 cup sugar
1 cup potato chips
1 cup pretzels
1 cup of candy - mini M&Ms, Sixlets, Chopped Rolo's, chopped Resses PB cups, nuts, dried fruit, marshmallows - basically anything you want in your popcorn
melted chocolate
salt

Prepare your area. This goes fast and it's really hot! Be ready!
You can spread out foil or two silicon mats to dump the popcorn on to. Have you chips, pretzels and candy ready to go. I lightly crushed the potato chips and pretzels and had my candy ready to pour.

In the Whirley Pop, add the oil, popcorn kernels and sugar. Close the lid and let it sit over medium heat stirring it a few times until you hear it pop. Stir constantly until the popping slows to a few pops per second. It should all pop up in less than a minute.

If you don't have a popcorn popper, you can use your 4 Qt. pot on the stove. I used to make my popcorn this way until I got my Whirly Pop. Check out this post for directions on making popcorn on the stove top.

Open the lid and dump out the HOT sugar popcorn on to the silicon mats. This made six cups of a great kettle corn style popcorn.

You can leave it as is OR.... add the chips, pretzels, candy and a touch of salt and let it cool.

Melt some chocolate and drizzle it over the popcorn and (again) wait for it to harden.

I didn't make this on a cookie sheet... I just like to use the counter. On second thought, I guess you could divide the popcorn on to two cookie sheets and pop it in the fridge to speed up the process.

Since this was going on a picnic, I packaged it up in cone shaped baggies to make it easier to eat and enjoy.

This was a hit at the picnic! It was a great dessert with a little bit of sweet and a little bit of salty that everyone loved.
